Welcome to Square Foot Gardens for You

Welcome!  We are here to help you enjoy your square foot garden, to answer questions and share experiences about our gardens.  We will have book reviews and gardener profiles.  We welcome pictures of your garden and comments about how you solved a problem, or about something you need to resolve.

It’s Fair time again.  Lots to see and do.  I’ll be speaking at 2, 4 and 6 today and again on Friday September 26 in the Flower and Garden Show Building.  Have a fun day, and stop by and say Hi and we’ll talk gardens.

It’s Fair time at the Los Angeles County Fair. I’ll be speaking again at 2, 4 and 6 pm this Friday September 27 in the Flower and Garden Show Building.  Come on out and enjoy the fair, and stop by the Green Thumb theater to hear about Square Foot Gardening.  The first 3 people who stop by and tell me you saw this message will get a free pair of garden gloves.

Summer is officially over, and we’re getting ready for fall planting, making a list of cool season vegetables and planning our plots.  I have some ideas for trellises that I want to try out for our vining crops.  I’ll put pictures and plans here when I get them done.   If you know someone who has a child in elementary school in Los Angeles County, and you would like to see a Square Foot Garden installed at their school, leave me an email and I’ll get back to you about it.

We’ve been having some noteworthy heat this summer.  It’s a challenge to some plants in the garden, but others thrive under these conditions.  Check your soil daily for moisture levels, and make sure it is damp at least up to one inch from the surface.  Water early in the day or in late afternoon to avoid sun burning your veggies.  Pick veggies as soon as they reach optimal ripeness.  This will encourage more growth for a bigger harvest.

Have you planted cucumbers or squash?  Check under those big leaves.  You’ll often find something ready for eating hiding in the shade of the plant.  I was looking for cucumbers a few days ago, wondering why I had such a poor showing, when I saw a nice big one down near the base of the plant.  Surprise, I found 2 more ready for picking, and there were even more coming along that a quick glance would have missed.

We have a workshop tomorrow at the L.A. County Arboretum from 10 am to 1 pm.  We’ll be planting in our plot in the newly renovated Garden For All Seasons, and meeting Tom Moure, head gardener, who will talk about the need for volunteers and identifying plants for us that are growing so well there.  Hope to see some of you there.
